Korean/Nat Young people in South Korea have less faith in the future of their society than their Chinese and U-S counterparts, according to a recent survey. Eighty percent of high school seniors in South Korea go to college, while the illiteracy rate is three percent - one of the lowest in the world. But according to the survey by the World Association of Research and Development for Youth, it seems young people in South Korea are uneasy about their futures. This is Seoul National University in South Korea. This boy is being congratulated by his friends after being accepted into the university - the country's top higher education institution. But this girl is distraught because she didn't find her name among the successful applicants. It's a familiar scene, played out in colleges and universities around South Korea in January every year. Eighteen-year-old Kim Ki-suk is a senior at Chong Dam High School in Seoul. He is at school by seven o'clock every morning, six days a week - his schedule for the past three years. His goal is to get into Seoul National University. To do so, he must study at least 19 hours a day, everyday, including Sundays, until he takes his entrance exam in December. There is no time for any other activities. These senior high school students study 12 subjects and must score highly in all of them to pass the college entrance exam to get into one of the top South Korean universities. Kim and his friends eat their lunch in the classroom in between classes so they can spend more time in the school library. He says positive peer pressure has given him the strength and endurance to study so hard. SOUNDBITE: (Korean) "I have good friends and good alumni who encourage me. They have helped me a lot. Especially from my school alumni, I get good advice since they went through the same experience. And because of them I think I have managed to grow up well and think positive about the pressure." SUPER CAPTION: Kim Ki-suk, Student Kim is unique in that he is also the student body president at Chong Dam High School. Unique because not only is it difficult for him to find the time to do the job, but most of his peers would rather not "waste" time in such activities. But Kim believes he's where he is today because he made the effort to do something other than study. SOUNDBITE: (Korean) "I have to go to college if I want to achieve my goals. And in order to do so, I have to study like a robot and endure the difficulties. I think about the future and this helps me." SUPER CAPTION: Kim Ki-suk, Student After school, Kim goes to extra classes. On Monday and Wednesday nights, Kim goes to three-hour-long extra maths classes to help improve his results. Other senior class students do the same - study at school, study at home and study after school. There are some 29-hundred institutions in South Korea that teach extra classes. Those who can afford it have private tutors who come to their homes. With such tough competition, the ratio of successful applicants to failures is 1 to 1-point-4. Critics of the education system say the environment isn't conducive to developing artistic potential and doesn't allow young people to express their thoughts and feelings. They say this is because the curriculum is geared towards memorising facts and equations to pass the entrance exam. But the principal of Chong Dam High School believes that it is a necessary phase for young people to go through. SOUNDBITE (Korean) SUPER CAPTION: Kim Haeng-Mok - Chong Dam High School Principal So why is going to college so important? Back then, higher education meant success as a doctor, lawyer or bureaucrat thus commanding respect and elevated status in society. That standard of success still remains prevalent in Korean society. Korea Future Technology recruited the help of concept artist Vitaly Bulgarov to build a real-life functioning mech called METHOD-1. This is not a promotional stunt or some sort of gimmick but a proof of concept in its earliest stages. Obvious aesthetic influences aside, METHOD-1 wasn’t built to pay homage to Mech Warrior, Robotech, Mobile Suit Gundam, or any other multitude of giant robot fiction. METHOD-1 wasn’t even constructed for a specific task, but rather, for a specific goal: to explore the number potential real-life scenarios that could benefit from its technology. KFT remains hushed over its choice in motors, actuators, and sensors—let alone the robot’s full breadth of features. As far as we can tell, it might not even be anything more than a fancy art exhibit, but if the promotional video above is to be trusted, METHOD-1 seems capable of not just walking, but moving its arms in-sync with the operator’s arm movements. And that’s a huge step up from 2015’s KURATA, a fancy-looking, but semi-useless 4-ton mech battle suit from Japan that cost for $1,000,000 and moved at 10 km/h (6.2 mph).

AeroFarms' crops are grown entirely indoors using a reusable cloth medium made from recycled plastics. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world.
